Link safety
Unsafe-site warnings and broken-link alerts for your tracking domains, offers and landing pages — what is checked, what counts as broken, and where you hear about it.
A link can stop working without anything in UTMCAP changing. The offer page is taken down, the network moves it, or Google adds a landing page's address to its list of unsafe sites — and every visitor you pay for from then on lands on an error page or a red browser warning.
Link safety watches for both, so you hear about it before the spend does.
Link safety is on the Growth, Pro and Scale plans.
#What is checked
Unsafe sites. Your tracking domains, offers and landing pages are checked against Google's lists of unsafe sites — malware, phishing and deceptive pages, and unwanted software. These are the same lists that put the red warning in front of a Chrome visitor.
Broken links. Your offers and landing pages
are opened at their address, the way a browser would. Tokens such as
{click_id} are left out, so what is checked is the page itself.
A new or edited offer or landing page is checked shortly after you save it. After that, the checks run every hour.
#What counts as broken
An address is broken when it answers with page not found (404 or 410), with a server error (500 and above), or not at all — no answer in time, a certificate that does not work, or a name that does not resolve.
It is marked broken only after two failures in a row, so a page that was down for a minute is not reported. One good answer clears it. Changing the address starts it again from nothing.
Some sites refuse visitors they take for robots, with 401, 403 or 429. Those answers are not counted as broken: the page is there, it just turned the check away.
A campaign that sends visitors nowhere is reported too — one that is active while every offer and landing page in it is paused or deleted and it has no fallback address.
#A page that looks fine can still be broken
Some servers show an ordinary-looking page and send it with a 404 code. The page reads normally in a browser; the code says it was not found. Ad networks read the code too, and a destination that answers 404 is treated as not working however it looks.
To see the code: open the page in Chrome, press F12, open the Network tab, reload, and select the first line. Status Code says what the server answered.
#Where you see it
- Offers and Landing pages — an Unsafe or Broken label next to the name. Tracking domains Google lists are marked Unsafe on the Domains page.
- The bell — one alert for each, with what was found and a link to fix it.
- Email — the Broken links and Unsafe-site warnings notifications, both on until you switch them off under Settings → Notifications.
#On Free and Starter
UTMCAP checks every account's links, whatever the plan, to keep the shared link domains clean. On Free and Starter the results are not shown: there are no labels, no alerts and no emails, and the two notification switches are marked Growth and up. Move to Growth and the results appear, including anything already found.
